The Mother: A Free Sourdough Starter Dating Back to 1736
The Mother is a dehydrated heritage sourdough culture with a family story dating back to 1736. The starter itself is free. For one packet, you pay $4.95 shipping and handling, which covers postage, packaging, and the work of preparing your order. We ship within the United States only.
More than 17,000 orders have included The Mother. We prepare orders in 1–2 business days, then USPS delivery typically takes another 5–7 business days. This USPS service does not include package tracking. You can check your order status using the email from checkout.
What's included
- One dehydrated packet of The Mother, ready to reactivate with flour and water
- The Sourdough Starter Welcome Guide, with activation, feeding, and troubleshooting help
- The Sourdough Baker's Journal
- The Art of Sourdough
The three ebooks also cover your first loaf, ongoing care, and timing. Together, the starter and guides make up a $47 total value stack; $47 is not a separate price for the free starter.
How activation works
Follow the included instructions to rehydrate and feed the culture. Most starters show meaningful activity in 48–72 hours, depending on temperature, flour, and water. Bake when the starter is reliably active, rather than on a fixed clock.
Our activation guarantee
If your starter has not activated after 72 hours while you followed the instructions, contact support@motherscountrystore.com within seven days of delivery. Tell us whether you prefer a free replacement or a refund. A photo is highly encouraged for troubleshooting but is not required to request help. Mold, contamination, or heat damage after delivery is normally excluded unless shipping or packaging caused the problem. Read the full guarantee.
The story we share
Our handed-down account traces The Mother to a German village in 1736, an Atlantic crossing around 1836, and a westward journey on the Oregon Trail around 1849. These are approximate details of family lore rather than documented dates for every transfer. Mary Claire's family kept a portion of the culture for many years; Miss Bubbles was their nickname for it. Mother's Country Store began building the brand and preparing this offer in 2020 before opening the family starter to a wider public.
