Shipping & Storage

Your dehydrated sourdough starter ships dry and dormant so it can travel safely and reliably. When it arrives, you’llactivate it at home using flour + water to turn it into an active, living starter.

How We Ship Your Starter

  • Shipped via USPS
  • Starter arrives dehydrated (dry) for stability in transit
  • Includes activation instructions so you can start confidently

Because it ships dehydrated, it’s typically more travel-friendly than a liquid/active starter under normal shipping conditions.

Food-Safe Handling (Simple Rules)

Sourdough starter is a living culture. Handle it like any food prep:

  • Use a clean jar and clean utensils
  • Wash hands before handling
  • Keep the jar covered (but not airtight if your activation instructions say it needs airflow)
  • Avoid cross-contamination from raw foods and dirty tools

How to Store Your Starter (Dehydrated/Before Activation)

If you’re not ready to activate right away:

  • Keep the packet sealed
  • Store in a cool, dry place (a pantry is fine)
  • Avoid heat, humidity, and direct sunlight

Humid climate tip: Keep the sealed packet inside an airtight container in a cool cabinet.

Hot or Cold Weather Delivery Tips

Because your starter ships dehydrated, it’s naturally more resilient in transit than a liquid starter. Still, we recommend:

  • Don’t leave deliveries in a hot mailbox or direct sun for extended periods
  • Bring it inside promptly when it arrives

If you suspect extreme heat/cold exposure affected your starter, email support@sourdoughstarter.com and we’ll help.
